How many people know the benefits of tomatoes, red wine, berries and spinach

These are foods with proven health benefits.

  • Lutein, the pigment in the skin of tomatoes, protects the fruit from the sun. It does the same for your skin.
  • Red wine in moderation is good for the heart. The pigment reseveratrol may be the reason but red wine is also packed with a range of polyphenols including anthocyanins.
  • Anthocyanin, the pigment that makes berries red and blue is good for the memory and lots of other things including the heart and arteries.
  • The yellow pigment in spinach called xanthophyll is more or less the same chemical as the macula in the eye. It seems your body can take the pigment from a spinach leaf and stick it in your eye. This prevents/delays and even repairs to some extent macula degeneration. It's possible that xanthophyll protects the leaf from the sun and it might do the same for your eyes.
